以下了解一下典型的超大规模云计算数据中心架构。假设一个数据中心目前在mesh+Pod或Pod+叶脊架构中部署了30000多台服务器，其中三个pod连接构成一个mesh网络。典型的骨干交换机多支持432个40GbE端口(36×12)。以3：1的比例，上行链路网络(网格级别)将占用108个端口，这意味着Pod中机架顶部(TOR)交换机的大顶部不能超过324个。实际上，机架式交换机的数量应该更接近多200个或300个。每个TOR交换机可以为下行链路提供48个10GbE端口，为上行链路提供4个40GbE端口。在叶子和主干网之间建立了一个4×40GbE网络链接，并具有四个带有OM4光纤的MTP12通道来支持网络。
随着带宽消耗呈指数增长，10GbE不能满足要求。计划已经要求在新的超大规模数据中心中使用25GbE，这将使用MPO12和OM4来支持链接，从而将叶脊网络和主干网络之间的速度提高到100GbE。但是，要真正面向未来，需要从服务器到分支交换机的主流为40GbE，如图1所示。
